Connecting Communication with Community

Having a degree in communication is a great thing because it allows people to have a vast selection in career paths compared to other, more specific majors. Although this sounds like a good thing, it can be challenging since there are so many options. In the fall of 2021, I wanted to create an event that connected communication majors with actual people in the community who had a degree in communication from Emporia State so that they had a better idea of what they could potentially do.

Planning this event allowed me to learn the process of what it takes to plan an event from start to finish.

  • Contacted the university to reserve a space for the event

  • Researched what successful events should include and a potential timeline

  • Communicated with alumni from Emporia State

  • Recruited a team of volunteered and delegated tasks to them

Connecting Communication with Community was structured as a come and go style event. There were approximately 40 students who attended the event. I was able to connect with 20 different alumni who work in a variety of different fields of communication. I also was in contact with numerous members from the university in preparation for the event.
